NIOS BOARD TUTOR MARK ASSIGNMENT (TMA) FOR 10th & 12th CLASS

What is Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA)?
Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) are an important part of the Open Schooling system. They are designed to improve a student’s learning skills and make studying more effective. By attempting TMAs, learners get regular practice in writing answers, which helps them prepare better for the final examinations.
TMAs encourage students to develop good study habits and give them a chance to assess their own progress. They also act as a kind of rehearsal for exams, boosting confidence and understanding. Through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system, TMAs play a vital role in the learning process.
In addition, TMAs help teachers identify areas where learners may need extra support, so that proper guidance, remedial teaching, and Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs) can be planned. Overall, TMAs are not just assignments—they are valuable tools for building knowledge, confidence, and success in open schooling.
Internal Assessment in NIOS is done through one Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA) in each subject, provided in booklet form. These assignments are checked by subject tutors at the Accredited Institutes (AIs), who also give feedback and suggestions for improvement. Learners can also download the TMA from the official NIOS website.
Since the academic year 2015-16, Internal Assessment (IA) in Secondary and Senior Secondary examinations carries 20% weightage, while the external/public examination carries 80% weightage. Both marks are reflected together in the final marksheet.
TMA is mandatory for learners admitted through Stream-1 only and must be submitted before appearing in the Public Examination of that subject.
TMA is not applicable to learners seeking registration under Streams II, III & IV
Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) Guidelines
In this booklet, you will find one assignment for each subject. You are required to complete the assignments in your own handwriting for the subjects you have chosen and submit them to your teacher.
-
Each TMA carries 20 marks, and the marks distribution is given at the beginning of the assignment.
-
Questions 1, 2, and 3 are short-answer type questions of 2 marks each.
-
Questions 4 and 5 are long-answer type questions of 4 marks each (attempt only one out of the four given).
-
Question 6 is project-based. Out of the four listed projects, you need to complete only one, which carries 6 marks. Detailed guidelines for each project are provided along with the topics.
TMAs are designed to help you learn effectively, practice answer writing, and receive valuable feedback from your teachers. If assignments are not submitted on time, ‘ABSENT’ will be marked in the marksheet under the TMA column, which is not acceptable for any student.
Earlier, from the 2002 examinations, TMAs carried 20% weightage in the final results. However, this system was later discontinued. Still, TMAs remain compulsory, and the grades obtained are shown separately in the final marksheet under a specific column.
As per the Prospectus 2011-12, submission of at least one TMA in each subject is mandatory. Students who fail to submit TMAs will either not be allowed to appear in the public examination or their results may be declared as “INCOMPLETE.”
